Village Marriage

In Chhattisgarh villages, the wedding occurs in the months of March, April & June. Before the marriage there are various formalities they have to fulfill. First of all, a boy who got to marry has to go to search a suitable girl or parents will find through their relatives. When boy's & girl's parents agreed upon then the boys party go to girl's house with their own relatives and or with cast group called 'Saga', who co-operates from beginning to the end of the marriage.

In Chhattisgarh villages, people treat a guet as a god and specially when someone is going to become the relatives; villagers do whatever the possible ways of pleasing. Even though they don't have the meals for two times, still they'll borrow from someone and try to make delighted.

After having meals, both the party will be seated and start talking about marriage proposal in the best possible or ideal way. Imfact it's tradition to speak in the way of 'Saga-Neti talk'. Neither too slow, nor in too hurry, but staying with calmness and saying in this way that everybody likes it.

When both the parties are agreed then then fix the date for further procedure. The marriage can be within month or after one year. Boys party comes for Sagai or 'Faldan' . It is also called 'Panch Piye Pindhan'. At this time whatever the formalties has to be fulfilled is done like 'Shadi ka joda', jewelary, etc are given to the girl. She wears it and come to the group where both the parties are being seated. The girl party try to show that our girl is now in very good condition physically & mentally.

The date of marriage is fixed as per their convenience, but the month of marriage should not match with the month of birth. It is done without the help of Brahman. They fix a date at which boys party has to give the pre estimated amount of rice to the girl party.

So, the number of marriage days are determined as per their convenience, genearlly it is 4- 6 days. At the ancient time, it was 8-10 days and also inspite of these days, one week before 'Damkach' was being danced. It is kind of dace which is played before & after the marriage, for it people play Dholak or simply play steel bucket and chhappar made of clay.

Finally, the date comes when a boys party has to send their 'Full Handi' to the girl party. This fulhandi consists of all the things which are required for initial Puja of marriage as well at the time of 'Fera'.

So marriage preparation start from the two weeks before, they have to prepare 'Madwa', in which villagers dig 9 holes and put pillars, by the help of these pillars a roof is created, at the top of roof, the branches of Jamun with leaves are placed and various other decorations & lightening is done.

On the first day of marriage, there is done a Puja by the Baiga, who requires various things like 9 'long Sarai dar', Mahua & Bamboo branch with leaves, black Tendu branch with spiral cut and other items of Puja. These all things are assembled at a place and boud by strings. These all arrangements are done by boys. Girls and drum (village marriage instrument players) also called Dom, come with Baiga.

Baiga does Puja and at the end of Puja some competitions occur between boys and girls. Girls try to throw the water mixed with Haldi and or rice powder and at the same time, boys who have to go along with the sarai dar, save from that water. This competition become so interesting with the music of war sound. These sarai dars are inserted with all the 9 pillars and rest of the stuffs are kept at the middle of the pillar of Madwa.

Later on boy/girl who is marrying; oils and Haldi are poured into his/her body. Girls take him on waist or with the help of cart two girls lift him and with the unique dancing pattern with matching the Doms music, they take round of the middle pillar. Rest of the girls dance by being interconected with the help of hands and take round of the middle pillar. When music changes other girl start paste haldi on him and some other girl take for round. This kind of process goes 3-4 hrs.

At evening again it starts this time boys, girls, gents, ladies and children come for dancing & enjoying. Boys sing 2 or 3 'Kahra' songs in between a music by Dom. These dances go till 2-3 a.m. or sometimes it goes for whole night.

Next day 'Dal hardi' is played, here people, specially women come with Haldi, oils and rice. These all Haldi & oils are pasted to the boy called 'Dulha Raja', who is going to marry. All people enjoy it alot, there becomes the environment like the Holi with music. This process goes till evening. After that Dulha Raja is bathed and prepared for 'Barat'.

Generally, Barat is gone at evening or at night and are lodged at village school. At morning, sister of wedding girl comes with the breakfast, called 'Baji', it is only for Dulha Babu. For other Barati, separately the arrangement is done. In this Bhaji, Dulhi's sister cleans feet of Dulha and demand money by holding & torchuring the finger of foot. Until or unless the demand is fulfilled, she doesn't leave it.

After sometime, 'Parghani' is done, this is a most interesting moment when girls party welcomes the boys party. Both parties come up with their own music systems and by specific style of music people dance. This sound is rung especially for fighting. Doms of the both parties fight, by running and doing some stunts. Later on Dulha is welcomed by mother and other aunties of Dulhi.

Generally, Puja is done by five or six edged people among relatives or by Brahman and all the relatives meet by Samdhi Dhakka, it's kind of hugging but by very ruth way, also they exchange their new Dhoti or towel as a gift. Later on fera is taken, after this other formalties are fulfilled and followed by lunch.

After lunch games are played between Dulha & Dulhi and their subordinates. These games are played to bring new couples closure. At evening 'Chumain' occur, where whole villagers come with their gifts; some utensils or clothes. After then 'Vidai' comes, by the mean time all the gifts items are kept in the vehicle and come back to the Dulha's home at night.

Next day 'Madwa Jhara' is done where all the villagers are given party by Dulha. At evening again chumain occur and hence Village marriage gets over.
